Métis Nation Health
Welcome to the Métis Nation Health site. Health and Wellness is an area of high priority for the Métis Nation. The Métis Nation takes a community-informed, evidence-based approach to health and wellness and has demonstrated success in collaboration that is based on Métis Nation-specific approaches. It is pursing health policy and investments on a nation-to-nation, government-to- government basis with Canada and aims to make significant improvements to the health and wellness of Métis Nation citizens and communities.
On April 13, 2017, Canada and Métis Nation leaders signed an historic Canada-Métis Nation Accord. Health was identified in the Accord as a priority. In this area, the Accord commits the Parties to work together to:
- Develop approaches to respond to specific health needs and priorities;
- Identify opportunities for the Métis Nation to engage with the federal government in health and wellness policy, program development, and delivery;
- Continue and strengthen opportunities for Governing Members to undertake Métis-specific health research and surveillance to identify health issues; and
- Collaboratively determine areas of shared priority; and to improve the coordination, continuity and appropriateness of health services for Métis people.
Historically the Métis Nation has been effectively excluded from direct health supports and services available to other rights bearing Indigenous peoples (First Nations and Inuit). As a result, to date, investments in Métis Nation-specific health initiatives are lacking. The Métis Nation is committed to working with federal and provincial governments to improve Métis Nation health and wellness status and outcomes of Métis Nation citizens.
